DrupalEasy Podcast 26: Flash With Drupal - Travis Tidwell Interview

Join Mike Anello and Erik Baldwin as they talk with Travis Tidwell about his Flash With Drupal book from Packt Publishing.

Travis is also the author of the popular Flash Video and Dash Media Player modules. During the interview, they discuss the various ways to integrate Flash movies with Drupal, including utilizing the powerful Services module.

They also discuss the evolving role of Flash on the web and the different ways that Flash can be incorporated into sites. Of particular note, they discuss the pros and cons of creating an entire site out of Flash versus including multiple Flash objects on a site. Travis has been leading the way in figuring out the best way to allow multiple Flash objects to communicate via JavaScript within a Drupal site.

Packt Publishing has, once again, been generous in providing us with 2 copies of Flash With Drupal to giveaway to our readers/listeners. Excellent interview -- thanks for posting that.

Please register me for a chance to win a copy of the book, because I'm about to start a project in which jQuery could be a huge win. Thanks!

Travis, thanks for brining up the subject of Flash and Drupal interactions. I think there is huge potential there and I see it already starting to pick up steam. I'm sure your book will be a big part of that. Here's an example of a project that I worked on where we integrated Flash and Drupal together using the Services module. One of the requisites of project was that was to be in Flash. I used SWFObject and SWFAddress along with some clever Drupal theming to make a flash site that was bookmarkable and searchable by google.

Register me up for a copy of your book. I wish that I had had it when working on this project :)

Thanks.

hey guys,

I've been listening to the podcast for a while now. Thanks for all your great work. I was particularly into this one because I'm sort of a former flash developer. I used to do nearly 100% flash sites but phased that out 5-6 years ago in favor of open standards and open source. Lately I've been getting more curious about where Flash has been going and how to use it with Drupal. So thanks, Travis for this very timely (for me, anyway) book!

Flash is one of the most "unexplored" areas of Drupal and it is quite interesting because clients keep demanding it! great interview and the book looks awesome!

I appreciated that Travis was a pragmatist about the value of flash, but also a great advocate for web standards. It was a great discussion, and I appreciate learning more about the services module, which sounds like a great way to extend drupal's capabilities beyond the walls of your own site.

Your podcast is a great community service and has helped me find a lot of new modules for my work with drupal. Keep it up!
