DrupalEasy Podcast 41 - Interview with Jacob Redding

Ryan Price and Mike Anello recently talked with Jacob Redding (jredding), author of Beginning Drupal as well Treasurer and Interim General Manager of the Drupal Association.

Beginning Drupal, released earlier this year by Wiley Publishing, covers a large selection of Drupal topics. Jacob mentions that he wrote the book to be a reference for someone who is not only building a Drupal site, but who also wants to really understand how Drupal works.

The book was written for Drupal 7 - many of the topics in the book cover the changes between Drupal 6 and Drupal 7 including (but definitely not limited to): user vs. profile fields, public and private fields, content type block visibility, and localization.

Jacob, Ryan, and Mike discuss specific portions of the book and the style in which it is written. Jacob has been a professional Drupal trainer for several years, and has tried to leverage what he has learned about teaching Drupal when writing this book. As an added bonus, the subject of zoot suits was brought up as well.

Wiley Publishing has given us a couple of copies of the book to giveaway - simply leave a comment below (be sure to leave your twitter or drupal.org username so we have some way to contact you) and we'll pick two winners at random.

Want more information about Jacob? Check him out at @jredding on Twitter or on his blog at jredding.info.

UPDATE - comments and content registration is closed. Winners will be announced on DrupalEasy Podcast 42.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the great interview about the book. Some of the advice in the interview will be useful when i start running my training classes here for the Syracuse city school district.

I've been working on a program to teach web development skills to disadvantaged students, starting with very basic HTML all the way up through Drupal at the top of the ladder. I was really excited to hear the interview with Jacob, because it sounds like his book takes just the approach I'm looking for, particularly since I want to build this curriculum for Drupal 7 and my experience is only through v6 to this point. I'm going to run out to the bookstore as soon as I can to take a look, but won't be able to buy since funds are limited. I could certainly put a free book to great use!

And great podcast too!

Thanks,

Wow,

You guys do such a great job of interviewing authors so that we, your listeners, can learn so much not just about the book, but also about the author and their involvement with Drupal.

Drupal Easy is a unique resource within the Drupal community.

Keep up the good work,
Hector

Great to have a teacher write a Drupal book. Nice that he has international experience. Great testimonial to the book that even the experts learned something new from a book called Beginning Drupal. Brave of him to publish a book based on D7 before the final release. I am looking forward to reading the book.

I enjoyed the podcast and look forward to the book. What an adventurous soul Jacob must be to write a book about software that hasn't been released yet. That would frustrate me greatly but I'm thankful to him for doing it.

Well done guys,
Another great Drupal interview. I bought Emma Jane's Front End Drupal book after your interview with her. Looks like this is another one that is a must read!
