Drupal 9.4, 9.5 or 10 assessment helper

Before you start

  • "Not sure" is always an acceptable answer. We follow up on every submission, so don't let one question stop you.
  • You need to be able to log in to your site as an administrator.

For Drupal 9.4, 9.5, and 10 we suggest temporarily installing a free module called Xray Audit. It produces a set of reports about your site and lets you download all of them in one file.

Step 1: Have the module installed

Sites on these versions of Drupal usually need a developer to add a module. Send these lines to whoever maintains your site:

Please install the Xray Audit module so we can complete an upgrade assessment.

  • Drupal 10: composer require 'drupal/xray_audit:^2.0.4'
  • Drupal 9.4 or 9.5: composer require 'drupal/xray_audit:^1.6.3'

Then enable it: drush en xray_audit

Use these versions or newer. Earlier releases have a known security issue.

Step 2: Open the reports

  1. Log in to your site as an administrator.
  2. Go to Reports > Xray Audit Reports.

Step 3: Read off your answers

From the Xray Audit reports:

How many fieldable entity bundles?

Where to look: Content Metrics > Node reports > Nodes grouped by type, Taxonomy Terms reports > Terms grouped by type, and Paragraphs reports > Paragraphs grouped by type.
What to do: Count the rows in each report and add them together.

How many content entities?

Where to look: the same three reports, plus Content Access Control and Users > User reports > Grouped by status.
What to do: Add up the counts. A rough total is fine.

How many contributed modules are enabled?

Where to look: Packages > Modules > Contrib modules report.
What to do: Count the modules listed.

What does your site use for search?

Where to look: Packages > Modules > Contrib modules report.
What to do: Look for "Search API", "Solr", or "Elasticsearch". If none appear, you likely use Drupal core search or none at all.

Does your site use Drupal Commerce?

Where to look: Packages > Modules > Contrib modules report.
What to do: Look for "Commerce".

A few answers come from pages your site already has:

Which version of Drupal?

Where to look: Reports > Status report.
What to do: Choose Drupal 9 or Drupal 10.

Is your site multilingual?

Where to look: Configuration > Regional and language > Languages.
What to do: Count the languages listed. If that page doesn't exist, choose No.

Content workflows or moderation?

Where to look: Configuration > Workflow > Workflows.
What to do: If the page doesn't exist or lists nothing, choose No. One workflow with a couple of states is Basic. More than that is Complex.

Step 4: Upload the reports (optional, but helpful)

  1. On the Xray Audit Reports page, click Download all reports as CSV.
  2. When it finishes, click the link to download the ZIP file.
  3. Upload the ZIP file using the Upload your site reports field on the assessment form.

Modules with no Drupal 11 upgrade path: choose Not sure on the form and upload the ZIP file there. It contains your module list, and we'll work out the answer from that.

Step 5: Have the module removed

Ask your site maintainer to uninstall it when you are done:

drush pm:uninstall xray_audit
composer remove drupal/xray_audit
